DesiccantDesiccant is a substance used for drying agricultural plant roots before harvesting. Desiccant accelerates crop ripening and facilitates machine harvesting. These substances are one of the varieties of herbicides.

Many desiccants are quite toxic therefore their usage at home should be reasonable. Please, study safety requirements for work with toxicants before using desiccants.

The main advantage of desiccant is acceleration of crop ripening without reducing its quantity and quality. These substances are used during harvesting of various agricultural plants including cotton, wheat, sugar beet, rice, potatoes, legumes and so on. Timely introduction of desiccants provides quicker harvesting, reduction of expenses for harvesting works and acceleration of the crop rotation. Contact herbicides or various inorganic compounds, for example, sulfuric and arsenic acids, as well as calcium, magnesium and sodium chlorates can be used as desiccants.

The mechanism of action of most desiccants looks as follows. Active ingredient is quickly absorbed by the green parts of plant destroying its cell structure. As a result, affected parts of the plant quickly lose moisture that accelerates ripening of agricultural crops and prepares them for more convenient harvesting.

Desiccant also dries or destroys weeds and, depending on the particular ingredient, desiccant helps to cope with a variety of cultivated plants diseases. Desiccants dissociate quickly in the plants, so they can be used for treatment of seeds and for those parts of plants, which are applied for food. Desiccants frequently dissociate under the influence of sunlight, therefore for their greater efficiency it’s recommended to carry out treatment on a cloudy day or in the evening.

In many cases application of desiccants allows to get some additional benefit. For example, due to capability of desiccants to accelerate the process of taking moisture out of various parts of plants (including seeds), desiccants reduce expenses connected with drying plants. Moreover, additional contact with chemicals does not affect the quality of agricultural products as desiccants are quickly removed out of plants and don’t affect acid and fat composition of the treated products.

Desiccation of crops is carried out at a certain stage of plant development.
